Let’s Talk About AI

We understand that AI is a sensitive and often polarizing topic, especially in creative communities like tabletop gaming, and we take those concerns seriously. AI is a powerful tool, and like any powerful tool, its use comes with responsibility. From day one, our focus has been on using AI in ways that enable creativity, not replace it. Here’s how we’ve built The ARK to support that:

  • The ARK does not use or make AI‑generated images. All visuals you see on our website, app, and marketing are human made.
  • While not perfect, the Scribe bot is tuned to avoid creative intervention. This is something we are continuing to improve.

We know there’s active, valid discourse across writing, art, programming, and tabletop communities. Our goal is not to automate storytelling, but to make it easier for you to focus on the creative parts of running a campaign. The DM’s ARK is meant to be a memory tool, not a story generator.

No. We use OpenAI’s API / Enterprise platform under terms where the data we send is not used to train or improve their models. Your campaign data stays securely in our database, protected by authentication. It’s not accessible to web crawlers, bots, or third-party AI systems. Your content remains yours.

As a small team of three, we needed a reliable and affordable way to get The ARK off the ground. OpenAI lets us do that without compromising on performance or bankrupting us. Long-term, our goal is to shift toward hosting our own AI stack to give us even more control and transparency. But first, we need to prove the concept, stay financially sustainable, and listen closely to what our users actually need.

When you invite the Ark Bot into a Discord voice channel, the raw audio stream is sent to OpenAI’s Whisper for transcription (speech to text). That transcription is used to generate session summaries and answer questions via Scribe. When you ask Scribe a question, we only send the relevant context: key excerpts, summaries, and titles, not your full campaign history.

Real-time transcription, storage, and retrieval tools aren’t free to run. Our tier system starts at $6/month and is designed to keep The ARK affordable while covering the basic costs of servers and APIs. During this beta period, The ARK is entirely free to use. All we ask in return is your honest feedback so we can build the best possible tool for DMs together.

Looking Ahead

At the end of the day, The ARK uses AI and we won’t pretend otherwise. But we’ve done everything in our power to use that technology transparently, ethically, and with respect for the communities we serve. We’re not a faceless tech company trying to disrupt creativity; we’re a few passionate nerds building something that we genuinely believe supports it. We believe AI can be used responsibly, and we’re committed to proving that by example.

We want to be the good guys in the AI space, not just by avoiding harm, but by actively building something that empowers rather than exploits. The ARK is a tool built for humans, by humans, and that’s exactly how it’s going to stay.
